A Carlton North institution

Gerald's Bar opened in Rathdowne Village in 2006 and quickly earned a reputation as one of Melbourne's most characterful neighbourhood wine bars. Gerald's Bar relocated to a larger home at 920 Lygon Street, where it continues to draw a devoted local crowd alongside visitors who make the trip specially.

Gerald's Bar is famous for its intimate atmosphere: stained glass windows filter amber light over mismatched furniture, an eclectic vinyl record collection supplies the soundtrack, and the decor veers happily into the quirky. The service feels genuinely personal. Staff know the wine list deeply and will steer you well.

The food at Gerald's Bar sits in the European small-plates tradition: charcuterie, fine cheese, seasonal bistro cooking, and pasta made in house. The menu shifts with the seasons. Come hungry, order generously, and linger.

What to expect when you visit

First-timer tips from regular visitors to Gerald's Bar.

🍷

Order to share

Gerald's Bar is built for sharing. Three or four small plates between two people is a good starting point. Add a larger plate if you are feeling ambitious.

🎶

Trust the playlist

The vinyl collection is part of what makes Gerald's Bar feel like no other place in Melbourne. The music is carefully chosen and the volume is set for conversation.

🍶

Ask about the wine

Gerald's Bar carries an extensive, thoughtfully curated list of mostly European wines alongside some Australian natural bottles. The staff enjoy talking about it.

🍽

The Parlour set menu

Gerald's Bar offers a formal four-course chef's menu in The Parlour room. Book ahead if that is the experience you want. Walk-ins seat at the bar and tables.

Saturday High Tea

Gerald's Bar runs a Saturday High Tea service, a less common but highly enjoyable way to experience the space in its afternoon light before the evening crowd arrives.

🏠

The Sileno Room

Upstairs, The Sileno Room is available for private events and corporate functions. Gerald's Bar handles bookings directly for that space.

Dishes worth ordering

These are the highlights from the current Gerald's Bar menu, with notes on why each one stands out.

Smooth chicken liver parfait served on golden toast at Gerald's Bar

Chicken Liver Parfait, Toast

$28

Gerald's Bar makes this parfait silkier than most and seasons it generously. The toast arrives properly grilled and thick enough to hold up. Spread it thickly. This is a classic bistro pairing done without shortcuts, and it works as a first plate while you settle in and pick your wine.

House-made spaghetti with cime di rapa and chilli at Gerald's Bar

House-Made Spaghetti, Cime di Rapa, Chilli

$35

Gerald's Bar makes this pasta in-house and the difference is immediate. The spaghetti has proper bite. Cime di rapa (rapini) is slightly bitter, wilted through the pasta with chilli and enough olive oil to make the bowl glossy. It is simple, honest, and very satisfying. Gerald's Bar understands that a great wine bar needs at least one dish this good alongside the plates.

Risoni of mussels with saffron and warrigal greens at Gerald's Bar

Risoni of Mussels, Saffron & Warrigal Greens

$38

Gerald's Bar brings a specifically Australian ingredient into this otherwise very European dish. Warrigal greens carry a mild, spinach-adjacent flavour that balances the sweetness of the mussels and the saffron's perfume. Risoni absorbs the broth into something between a pasta and a soupy stew. This dish is warming, deeply savoury, and a good reason to order a glass of something white from Burgundy alongside it.

Albany Rock oysters on ice at Gerald's Bar

Albany Rock Oyster

$6 each

Gerald's Bar sources Albany Rock oysters from Western Australia, a variety known for clean brine and a firm texture. Order three or four to open the meal. The kitchen also offers an oyster with charcuterie Kilpatrick at $7 each, which replaces the classic bacon version with cured meat. Both options reward the extra dollar spent on the better oyster.

Stracciatella with roasted red kuri squash at Gerald's Bar

Stracciatella, Red Kuri Squash

$28

Red kuri squash is nutty, sweet, and holds its shape when roasted. Gerald's Bar pairs it with stracciatella, the creamy pulled interior of burrata, and the contrast between the warm squash and the cool, milky cheese is exactly right. A strong vegetarian option at a menu that tilts heavily toward meat, and one of the prettiest plates Gerald's Bar puts out.

Quail scotch egg with Cumberland sauce at Gerald's Bar

Quail Scotch Egg, Cumberland Sauce

$15 each

Gerald's Bar scales down the pub classic to a quail egg, which means a smaller, more precise crumb and a yolk that stays jammy at the centre. The Cumberland sauce, made with redcurrant and citrus, cuts through the richness. Order two of these per person as a snack before the main plates arrive. They go well with almost anything on the wine list.

Yuzu meringue tartlet at Gerald's Bar

Yuzu Meringue Tartlet

$18

Gerald's Bar finishes the meal well. The yuzu curd is tarter and more floral than lemon, which lifts the meringue out of the ordinary. The pastry is short and crisp. This is the dessert to order if you want something bright to close a rich meal. The warm bread and butter pudding with clotted cream ice cream at the same price is the indulgent alternative if the night calls for it.

"A genuinely great neighbourhood bar: the wine list is serious, the food is considered, and the room feels like it belongs to the people who drink in it."
